The Volga GAZ 24-10 is a Soviet car -- and a poorly built, laughably outdated one. Today I'm reviewing the GAZ 24-10, and I'm going to show you all the quirks and features of a Soviet car that lagged far behind what we had in North America. I'm also going to drive the Volga and show you what it's like on the road.

No drive-thrus, no cupholders : logic explaination The soviet union had quite a good healthcare system, which can explain the pills. Something Americans surely won't understand. GAZ stands for "Gorky automobile factory". Gorky is a city . Get the facts right I must say the exterior design is really nice. It should be compared with other cars from the it was designed, not produced.

Of course it has iodine pills in case there's nuclear war and the Soviet wondercar is requisitioned by the People's Army to fight the imperialists of NATO and USA, they will need iodine pills to protect them from radiation when the world is turned into a nuclear wasteland

Granted this car is outdated by 1988 standards but come on, it's not as terrible as this guy is ranting about. The rear view mirror operates like many cars. Has he never driven a car with a manual day/night mirror ? They must not want the driver to look at himself as he is driving down the road, so mirror in the sun visor. The cup indents in the glove compartment are 1970 approved. That is how American cars had them in the 70's. Just about all European cars had first aid kits. I believe it's a good Idea. He goes on about it, and I'm not sure why. The good thing about the car is that many of the parts interchange with older cars making part replacement good for Russian car owners, mechanics and part places. Less inventory and better chances of having the part you need. He says It's warm in the car but he never opened the window to let fresh air in. How smart is that ? I was stationed in Germany and this car reminds me of the 1960's cars the American GI's were driving.

4:17 no the soviets didn't drive this, this wasn't a car for everyday people in the Soviet Union. The Soviets fortunate enough to receive permission to own a car generally had a outdated Fiat-ish Car from eighter VAZ (Lada), ZAZ or Polski Fiat, obviously depending on where they lived. GAZ 24 were used as Cab's, Policecars and for GOV. Officials or other important ppl

Just to educate you, Doug, a little. The first bottle you picked is "Йод" - Iodine we use in surgery as #1 topical antiseptic in 2021 here in USA (I used to work in surgery). Second bottle is a Valerian Root extract you take by mouth to calm your nerves. Helps with anxiety and insomnia. Third bottle is Boric Acid. It is a local antiseptic and coagulant. The fourth bottle was Iodine again. Now tell me what was so hilarious about it? The black pills are activated charcoal. Now, don't tell me you don't know what activated charcoal is. Do you always laugh when you see activated charcoal? Are you aware we are still using it here in USA in traditional research-based medical practice? There are people with different level of ignorance around. Yours is kind of extreme. You acted as if were a Papuan from New Guinea that have never seen meds in your life.

What's so weird about the Volga? I have to remember you that in my country, Romania, 2004 was the last year when we were still producing the Dacia 1310 which was actually a Renault 12 developed in 1969. In Poland, the year 2000 was the last year when they were producing the Fiat 126P (Maluch) which was developed in 1972. In Serbia, the year 2008 was the last year when they were producing the Yugo Koral which was developed in 1980 and the Zastava 101 which was developed in the '70. In Russia, the year 2012 was the last year when they were still producing the Lada 2107 which was developed in 1982. All these cars, in they're last years, had enourmas sales in they're countries but they were replaced by better technology or the company which was producing them, bankrupted.

When you laugh at something you don't understand, thinking it is stupid, you're actually showing your ignorance. Before you laugh about Russian luxury car, you have to understand that in Soviet culture word luxury had a bad connotation. It was all about practicality. They did not care much about the look. There are many things you look for, they did not regard as important. It was a culture setting with completely different values that you have no idea about, and you apply you values to judge it. Yeah, kind of ignorant.

As far as I remember First Aid kit in Volga came with: hydrogen peroxide, anti-motion medicine (distances in Russia are humongous so this is a neat addition) and charcoal tablets. Don't remember the rest of it unfortunately.

About the interior mirror, that must be a USA only (and that perfectly fine). In Europe, all cars without auto dim (almost all before 2000) did change the mirror inside the casing. I have never seen a car that moved the all mirror.

I don't understand why you are laughing so hard about the first aid kit. These are fundamental things; timely topical antiseptic treatment can save your limb. There are even sedatives. And even stomach problems are also solved with this set of drugs. So what's so funny about it? In our country, you may not find a pharmacy a hundred kilometers away, and we must be ready for this. (Yes, I'm from Russia, as you might have guessed, but It doesn't matter in this case.) Anyway, I like this video. I was interested to know what a person who drove a lot of cars can say about this car. Thank you, Doug. Please find another Soviet car!

The cup depressions in the glove compartment lid are the same as seen in most US cars in the 50's to 70's. For drinks at a drive in. There were no cup holders yet for driving and drinking - coffee of course. Head rests first showed up in the US because of federal regs in the late 60's, and were front seat only for years. A mirror only in the passenger side (once they thought of them) visor would also be typical, not something weird at all. In my 2018 car the passenger side has a light and the driver side does not. So this car isn't so ha ha ha hilarious as it is behind the Western times by about a decade or two.
dntlss Pirms 14 Stundām
The car is in really good shape, kinda looks like a 80s Volkswagen inside, i love how he always stresses on older cars how the passenger is neglected, back in the day before we arrived to these pansy times we live in if you were driving you were the fucking master , plain and simple, as long as i had access to a ashtray and a window i could roll down thats all i needed as a passenger, to this day if I'm driving i control the music,I'm driving, I'm in charge, lol

Doug, you lost your car enthusiast objectivity in this review. I for one am an owner of the 1985 LADA 21011 and the coolness factor when take it out on the streets of Detroit is nearly 100. You'd be surprised how many Soviet era cars have made their way to the States in the last few years. Do some searching. These cars were made for value and practicality, not for glamour, and they served their purpose.

This first aid kit was actually made for people who know how to use this stuff. There was much worse access to medical help and people much more often relied on their own knowledge. To this day many people in old eastern block prefer to cure themselves and have fully equipped drawer with lots of medical stuff. In western world, especially modern western world people are rather avoiding anything and are much more prone to kill themselves by mistake. First thing you picked is lye, sodium hydroxide aka caustic soda. It was quite often used to disinfect tools and other medical stuff, it may burn flesh and is quite dangerous. Second one seems to be valerian tincture, kind of tranquilizer. Might be used in case of some seizures, muscle cramps. Also, this kind of first aid kit was not just for minor injury in your car, it was commonly used as medic kit at home as well. If your kid does not feel well, you are more likely to get some help from car driving by your village than finding a doctor. Lots of this stuff is just general use like motion sickness, diarrhea and other common stuff you would not like to happen in travel. That's the stuff lots of people still take with them when they travel. Simply back then nobody cared about expiration dates.
